Fight Poverty by Investing in Children

Each day, poverty kills 24,000 children and keeps 121 million more (many of them girls) from attending school. Microfinance services can help poor families invest in their children's education and well-being, giving them hope and the opportunity for a more self-sufficient future. But in order to succeed, this process must take place in an environment that supports the protection of children and condemns their exploitation and neglect.

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child works to secure children's rights to survival, health and education in every country around the world. However, the U.S. has not yet ratified this important convention.

Join us in celebrating the upcoming International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – urge the Senate to help create a brighter future for poor children around the world by ratifying the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Letter to Senator John Kerry, Chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations

As a concerned citizen, I urge you to support U.S. ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which American diplomats helped to craft over two decades ago. The U.S., along with Somalia, is one of only two members of the United Nations that have yet to ratify their commitment to the principles established in this important document.

The ratification of the UNCRC by the U.S. Senate would serve as a powerful tool in protecting children globally by ensuring that the full range of human rights – civil, cultural, economic, political and social – are afforded to those under age 18. The care we provide to children today means that the adults of tomorrow will have the opportunity to succeed. Efforts to break the cycle of poverty will fail if we do not invest in the well-being of the next generation.

We cannot delay ratification any longer – it's time for the U.S. to demonstrate a commitment to children's welfare worldwide. I urge you to call for hearings to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child without further delay.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
